40 gallon barrels of 2-1 sugar water for every ten hives. It gets consumed in three days! Wow.

Guelph Ontario where the vids were filmed would have some pretty darn cold weather so working with single brood box hives with a single honey super for overwintering is quite intriguing. I wonder what their mortality rate ia.

Anyone in TVBA do this?

Many Canadian beekeepers have perfected overwintering their colonies in completely dark buildings where the temperature, humidity and CO2 levels are monitored and regulated. The target temperature is 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the optimal level to minimize honey consumption (above and below this it increases). The bees generate a fair amount of heat, so this is regulated by controlling the air flow into and out of the building. Their survival rates are quite good.

OPEN FEEDING 2:1. Paul Kelly, the manager of University of Guelph's apiary, says in the video that he open feeds two to one sugar syrup to his bees in the fall. First, has anybody had experience with open feeding in this area? Second, has anybody open fed two to one syrup?

Open feeding can be tricky. It can attract bees and yellowjackets from elsewhere. You need to be able to place the feeders a fair distance away from the colonies to avoid robbing.
