Medic! dysentary!

I have one box that is small and they have not been flying, I thought they were done.

I went to tear down the hive to preserve the comb, and found they are alive.

But they are pooping inside the hive on the top bars! I see no other outward signs of sickness. No DFW not sickly appearing.

Could they have stored something nasty in the honey?

I thought I'd double screen them to give them a boost, but if they are sick I don't want to risk another colonies health.

They have fondant and some pollen patty and I put some reflectix over the top to keep them as warm as I can.

What else can I do for them?

I have another box with drawn comb and stored honey I can move them onto, but if they are goners I'd just be wasting a good box.

No treatment advice in my honeybee malady book.....

I think the dysentery is a result of the bees not flying, a secondary issue. But I can see no reason they are not flying.

    Hey Rick, Tough choices here!

Today is supposed to be the warmest day so far this spring - will you be able to take a look at their activity this afternoon? There are honey ingredients that can cause dysentery - I think I just learned in bee school that late blooming Queen Ann's Lace is one. Sometimes warming spring weather can bring the bees out of the illness patch. Happy to have you check back after a report from today....

Might just one colony out of 6 in the yard be affected by poisonous honey? The honey they are on they gathered last fall from this same location as the other hives.

I would think that environmental things would affect all the hives in a yard.

Looks like the maples are starting to open! Sadly it looks like any blooms are going to get rain this weekend. I hope the buds are immature enough to not be affected. Looks like our freezing nights are done.

The bad honey diagnosis is something I can affordably counter, I have plenty of framed honey (I did not extract last year), I can swap everything they have that does not have brood on it easily.  And try to get as much poop out of the box as I can, fresh box even.

They are really calm, so I think still queenright.

Pollen in the front door today.

Looks like they might make it.
