Yes! A mite count is the first thing I would look at. "The #1 reason for hive failure at any time of the year, and at any location, is viral disease brought on by unchecked Varroa mite populations."

Both your colony losses can likely be attributed to mites.

Strong colonies rarely abscond and don't get robbed.

Here are some guides to help trouble shoot the deadout.

Food for thought, Rick. Thanks. I fed a little more last spring, trying to get my very late packages and nucs to draw out meduim supers. Zero comb was drawn.

I had six double deep colonies. One got robbed out or absconded early. One other apparently starved over winter and there was significant water in the bottom tray. As of yesterday four are growing and bringing in pollen. Feeding dry sugar via Vivaldi boards. The apiary is remote and not visited daily in winter.

Yes to telescoping covers. Insulation is burlap in the Vivaldi.

Propolis aplenty. Three colonies are quite heavy.

I have three acres+- of irrigated native prairie and haven’t had a serious dearth these last two seasons.

I plan to do a mite check the next time temps get into the fifties.

    Thanks again for the feedback

I paid 12 -13 for the last 2 bags I bought, 25#.  So that seems right. the only way to get it cheaper is to buy a larger quantity. I'd guess the next price break is a truckload.

Shipping will break the bank you so you need your own truck.

    Why so much sugar?

Too many hives? You need to hook up with a commercial guy when he buys syrup.

Overcrowding? Overwintering colonies that are overpopulated will plow through feed.

Leaky boxes? Cold bees will use more fuel to stay warm

No lid? No insulation? Cold bees burn more honey

Genetics?  Some lines of bees are not very thrifty in dearth.

I’ve been buying an “off-brand” of granulated sugar in 25 pound bags. $.50 a pound. I used 175 pounds during feeding season last year and wonder if members have a more economical source? I suspect prices have gone up recently and I’m burning through last years surplus. Thanks.
