I am convinced the solution to the varroa problem will be based on genetics. The Arnot Forrest bees show us this.
However it will take years to develop a strain, this research has been ongoing for many years at this point. 10 years of efforts and we have not even found a way to chase a mite out of a hive. Much less develop a resistant strain of bees.....
Lots of folks are working on many different vectors, I don't see a single obscure source of a cure/fix. I expect the victory will be a collaboration of different vectors.
Any cure or fix will be widely announced and monetized. And the commercial guys will get them first, because they can afford them.
