I've heard that some people solve the ant problem by putting the legs of the hive stand in cans with oil in the bottom. I haven't tried it, and don't know what kind of oil they use, or even if it works. You could look into that.

Do not feed the ants unless it is something with boric acid in it. I use Advion Ant Gel.

I had an ant problem until someone told me the ants will go anywhere the bees cant get to them, so I quit covering the hole in the top board.

I was laying fondant patty over the hole to keep the heat in. If I put the fondant off to the side (uncovering the hole), no more ants. (I had ants raising babies on top of my fondant package!)

We are new to bee keeping, and just got the nuc on Saturday. Installed nuc in the hive, and immediate noticed little sugar ants around the hive. We put cinnamon powder around hive to prevent ants from getting to the hive - we found this idea online, still watching to see if it works. Does this sound like an okay idea? Are bees okay with cinnamon powder?

We also think about setting up a sugar water plate, like 4-5 feet away from the hive, to try to attract ants to get to that sugar water, instead of bee hive, but is this an okay idea? Would we attract too much ants then cause new problems?

    Thank you all!
