Treating New Nucs

At the last meeting, Dr. Caron mentioned that the new nucs that went out this past weekend did not need to be tested or treated until July due to the fact they had already been treated by the people putting the nucs together.  I was under the impression that we should treat them with Api Life Var about a week after installation to be sure they are starting with lower numbers and especially since we will not be trying to extract honey this year and are just building them up.  Any thoughts?

Speaking from a treatment point of view, The most effective time to treat with OAV is when there is the least amount of capped brood.

Don't over dose them, I believe multiple easy doses of OAV are more effective than blasting them. OAV is also honey safe.

The other methods are temp sensitive, strips, gel or pads, I think that these are harder on the bees. Use with care.

As soon as your queen starts laying they are committed and will not leave.

Dr David Peck was just on Kamon's YouTube and covers this very subject after some political discussion, he covers the various forms of treatments and their limitations and expected results.

The essence is there is no Silver Bullet, there are some strategies that when combined have proven very effective.
