Queen mating

There is quite a bit of info out there for queen rearing and cell production.

I have not found much info on mating queens.

To have to rely on getting a virgin queen mated is not practical for emergency queen replacements. (especially late season)

How are breeders getting their queens mated?

It seems to me that it would also be valuable to choose which drones are available for mating?

This leads me to a million questions about "Drone Zones".... And conflicting observations regarding distance traveled by either/both sexes.  I guess the real determining factor, as are many things bee related, is opportunity.

I think I would like to locate a special colony near (right under) a DCZ to raise queens. It seems that would make things much easier. Except for all the drones that would want to stop by for a snack and a nap.
